Diabetes

I was diagonsed with Type-One Diabetes at the age of six.

It was not in our family and we knew nothing of the condition. We were lucky we had a doctor who understood about the condition and picked up on the symptoms.

Many are not so fortunate.

This page advises of the symptoms of Type-One diabetes, advises on the different types of diabetes facts about the condition and the reason I support the related charities.

What is Type One Diabetes

Type-One Diabetes is an autoimmune disorder in which the pancreas stops or fails to produce insulin.  It is in no way related to life-style or diet which is where it differs to those with type-two diabetes. There is currently no cure.

Type-One diabetes, can strike at anytime, but is mainly diagnosed in children and young adults.

If Type-One diabetes goes undetected it can be fatal so spotting the signs early is essential. There are still too many deaths in this country from undetected Type-One diabetes where doctors have failed to recognise the symptoms.

The test for diabetes is a simple finger prick, that can be done at any pharmacy/doctors or hospital, to test the amount of sugar in the blood stream, for anyone without diabetes this should sit at around 4-9mmol.

How to differentiate between Type-One and Type-Two Diabetes.

There is a big difference between Type-one and Type-Two diabetes. Type-One is an autoimmune disorder and there is no cure. It cannot be controlled by tablets and is not influenced by lifestyle, where as Type-Two diabetes can be controlled by tablets and diet.

Understanding Diabetes can be difficult, especially if you have never experienced it before. Understanding the differences between the types of diabetes can be confusing.

This video explains in an easy-to-understand way, and how I was taught about diabetes. I hope it helps you too.
